Dental implants

A dental implant replaces a missing tooth's root with a small titanium post, topped with a crown. It is fixed in place and doesn't need the neighbouring teeth to be cut.

How an implant works

The implant post fuses with the jawbone over a few months, becoming a strong base for a crown, bridge or denture.

Stages2–3Completed in3–6 months

Benefits

  • Fixed in place; nothing to remove at night
  • Looks and feels close to a natural tooth
  • Neighbouring teeth aren't trimmed, unlike a bridge
  • Helps keep the jawbone from shrinking where the tooth is missing

Who can get one?

Most adults with a missing tooth can be considered. The doctor checks a few things first.

What the doctor checks

  • Your jaw has finished growing (usually after 18)
  • There is enough bone to hold the implant; bone grafting may be needed if not
  • Your gums are healthy
  • General health: conditions such as uncontrolled diabetes, or heavy smoking, can slow healing

Treatment steps

Treatment is done in stages, with time for healing in between.

Step by step

  1. Consultation and X-rays. A 3D scan (CBCT) may be advised to measure the bone.
  2. Implant placement. The post is placed under local anaesthesia.
  3. Healing. 2–6 months while the implant fuses with the bone.
  4. Crown fitting. A scan or impression is taken and the final crown is fixed on the implant.

Looking after your implant

An implant can't get cavities, but the gum around it can get infected, just like around natural teeth.

Keep it healthy

  • Brush twice a day and clean between teeth
  • Come for check-ups and cleaning every 6 months
  • Avoid smoking, which raises the risk of implant problems

Other ways to replace missing teeth

An implant isn't the only option. The doctor will explain which suits you.
